Peace, love & chicken grease

Meet Josh & the lodge.

PJ's Cactus Lodge began after Josh found his first cactus during a late 2024 trip along the Santa Fe Trail from Independence, Missouri, to Trinidad, Colorado.

Back home, Josh and his best friend Scotty turned a 10 by 10 basement room into a place to grow. They use a gritty mix built around river rock from a spring-fed Missouri River tributary, then water with spring water and rainwater when the season allows.

Josh spent 15 years as a paramedic and firefighter, and has studied medicine in some form for 20 years. A lifelong reader with an interest in philosophy, he enjoys learning as much as growing.

Just a couple of Missouri hippies growing cactus, flowers, vegetables, and fruit. Everything here is grown with patience, shared honestly, and sent out with a little peace, love, and chicken grease.

Rooting
& grafts.

Two common things to see around a cactus bench, explained without turning care into a guessing game.

01 / Rooting a cutting

Let the fresh cut callus, then use a clean, fast-draining mix.

Keep the pot dry at first. Watering timing changes with the cutting, weather, light and potting mix.

When in doubt: keep it on the dry side and ask before making a big correction.

02 / What is a graft?

Two living cactus pieces joined to grow as one plant.

The top piece is the scion. The rooted base is the rootstock, which supports the plant below it.
